Ingredients

0/14 ready
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Purple gel food coloring
  • Green gel food coloring
  • Orange gel food coloring
  • Yellow gel food coloring
  • 4 cups buttercream frosting
  • Assorted fruit extracts: grape, lime, orange, lemon (1/2 teaspoon each)

The Story & Steps

Willy Wonka's Everlasting Gobstopper was designed to last forever, changing colors and flavors as you sucked on it. While our cake isn't quite everlasting (though your guests might wish it were), each layer offers a different fruit flavor and color, creating a surprise with every forkful.

Making the Layers

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour four 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Divide batter into four bowls. Add food coloring and extracts: purple with grape, green with lime, orange with orange, yellow with lemon. Mix each thoroughly.
  7. Pour each colored batter into a prepared pan.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Assembly

  1. Place the purple layer on a cake stand and spread with buttercream.
  2. Continue stacking: green, orange, then yellow layers, with frosting between each.
  3. Cover the entire cake with remaining buttercream.
  4. For decoration, pipe small frosting dots in all four colors around the sides and top.

Each slice reveals the rainbow of layers within, and the changing fruit flavors create a journey through taste that Wonka himself would approve of.
