Inspired by Game of Thrones' infamous Red Wedding, this dramatic layer cake features blood-orange curd and is considerably less traumatizing than its namesake.

Ingredients

0/13 ready
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Blood orange curd (1 cup)
  • Cream cheese frosting (4 cups)
  • Fresh pomegranate seeds
  • Edible silver leaf

The Story & Steps

The weddings of Westeros are legendary affairs, though not always for happy reasons. This cake draws inspiration from the pageantry and drama of the Seven Kingdoms, with layers as complex as the political intrigue, but far more delicious and significantly fewer betrayals.

Baking Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a measuring cup, mix buttermilk, red wine, and vanilla extract.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and wet ingredients to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  7. Divide batter evenly among prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Assembly

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread with half the blood orange curd.
  2. Add second layer and spread with remaining curd.
  3. Top with third layer and frost the entire cake with cream cheese frosting.
  4. Decorate dramatically with scattered pomegranate seeds (like jeweled drops) and delicate touches of edible silver leaf.

Serve this at your next gathering and assure your guests that, unlike certain Westerosi celebrations, the only thing dying tonight is their diet. The Lannisters may send their regards, but you'll send them a slice of this cake.
