Inspired by the infamous drink from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, this sorbet won't feel like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick, but it's delightfully complex.

  • 1 cup sugar
  • Zest of 3 lemons
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup gin
  • 1/4 cup blue curaçao
  • 2 tablespoons grenadine
  • 1 teaspoon edible gold luster dust
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish

The Story & Steps

The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is the most notorious cocktail in the known universe, invented by Zaphod Beeblebrox himself. While we can't quite capture the effect of Ol' Janx Spirit or Fallian marsh gas, this sorbet interprets the drink's legendary complexity and that crucial lemon component in frozen form.

Preparation Steps

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, and lemon zest. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves completely.
  2. Remove from heat and let the syrup steep for 30 minutes to infuse the lemon oils.
  3. Strain out the zest and let the syrup cool completely in the refrigerator.
  4. Once cold, stir in the lemon juice, gin, blue curaçao, and grenadine. The mixture should be a striking blue-purple color.
  5. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to manufacturer's instructions, usually about 25-30 minutes.
  6. In the last minute of churning, add the edible gold dust for that essential golden brick shimmer.
  7. Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 4 hours to firm up.
